Overthinking is quite common, we all do it sometimes, but some of us habitually think about matters in life, constantly evaluating options, without reaching a decision to act. When we overthink, judgments get cloudy and we get into a consistent phase of stress, eventually leading into a negative state of mind. Overthinking is like a cancer, which silently keeps the mind in a state of stress, criticism, depression and self-denial. Stop overthinking keep the faith

Absolute trust on Allah:

The main reason for us to overthink, is our enfeebled faith on AllahSWT. We start getting too many options, and think and rethink without having faith.

Say: “Nothing will befall us except what Allah has decreed for us; He is our Protector.” Let the believers, then, put all their trust in Allah. (Surah At-Tawbah 9:51)

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him]. (Surah Al-Imran 3:159)

If you do not help (the Prophet, remember) God had helped him when the infidels had forced him to leave (and he was) one of two. When both of them were in the cave, he said to his companion: “Do not grieve, for Allah is with us.” Then Allah sent divine peace on him, and invisible armies for his help, and made the unbelievers’ purpose abject. Most exalted is Allah’s word, for Allah is all-mighty and all-wise. (Surah at-Taubah 9:40)

Shukr Be grateful to Allah for what you have:

“Why other’s life is better than mine?” Majority of times, we start comparing ourselves, with others who are blessed with something more than us, this might be money, social position or any creative virtues. This creates a sense of wariness which forces us to think negatively.

AllahSWT Messengerﷺ said, “If Adam’s son had a valley full of gold, he would like to have two valleys, for nothing fills his mouth except dust. And AllahSWT forgives him who repents to Him.” (Sahih al-Bukhari: 6439)

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, my punishment is severe.’ (Surah Ibrahim 14:7)

Some Ansari persons asked for (something) from Allah’s Messengerﷺ and he gave them. They again asked himﷺ for (something) and heﷺ again gave them. And then they asked him and heﷺ gave them again till all that was with him finished. And then heﷺ said “If I had anything. I would not keep it away from you. (Remember) Whoever abstains from asking others, AllahSWT will make him contented, and whoever tries to make himself self-sufficient, AllahSWT will make him self-sufficient. And whoever remains patient, AllahSWT will make him patient. Nobody can be given a blessing better and greater than patience.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1469)

Always remember to say “Alhamdulillah”. The feeling of thankfulness comes from the heart and helps us to recognize our complete dependency on AllahSWT. Think about your life, and you will appreciate many blessings that AllahSWT has bestowed upon you.

Think positive: Don’t think of what can go wrong, but what can go right:

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is accepting of repentance and Merciful. (Surah Al-Hujrat 49:12).

The Prophetﷺ said, “Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false tales; and do not look for the others’ faults and do not spy, and do not be jealous of one another, and do not desert (cut your relation with) one another, and do not hate one another; and O AllahSWT worshipers! Be brothers (as AllahSWT has ordered you!”) (Sahih al-Bukhari 6064)

Change the channel:

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” (Surah ar-Ra’d 13:28)

Sabr: Stop waiting for perfection:

They said, “Are you indeed Yusuf?” He said “I am Yusuf, and this is my brother. Allah has certainly favored us. Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.” (Surah Yusuf 12:90)

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient. (Surah Al-Anfal 8:46)

Strange are the ways of a believer for there is good in every affair of his and this is not the case with anyone else except in the case of a believer for if he has an occasion to feel delight, he thanks (God), thus there is a good for him in it, and if he gets into trouble and shows resignation (and endures it patiently), there is a good for him in it. (Sahih Muslim: 2999)

Change your view of fear: every opportunity is a new beginning:

There are guardians over everyone, both before him and behind him, who guard him by Allah’s command. Verily Allah does not change a people’s condition unless they change their inner selves. And when Allah decides to make a people suffer punishment, no one can avert it. Nor can any be of help to such a people against Allah. [Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:11]

Realize you can’t predict the future and you cannot control everything:

A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in everyone, (but) cherish that which gives you benefit (in the Hereafter) and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart, and if anything (in the form of trouble) comes to you, don’t say: If I had not done that, it would not have happened so and so, but say: Allah did that what He had ordained to do and your” if” opens the (gate) for the Satan (Muslim: 2664).

“And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know.” [Surah Al-Baqarah: 216]
